How did this monstrosity come about?
We feel there is a lot of value in allowing the attendees to see what data they are accidentally leaking. We have found it is easier for attendees to understand how they are at risk through a visual medium. Attendees will generally ask us how to protect themselves if they just saw their loved one's picture fly across a screen. In addition, this was an attempt to bring the raw part of Defcon back to Defcon without permanently burning out the eyes of the innocent.
Several years back we projected the images going across the network live on the wall. It immediately drew a crowd to see the visual chaos displayed above. As the crowd realized it was "live", the images got progressively more disturbing. This is when DT (the owner of Defcon) literally sprinted to our booth to have us shut it down.
We created this peek-a-boo booth to allow those of you still interested in seeing an unfiltered version of what's flying across the Defcon network.
How many coins did you collect at Defcon 2010?
Despite our poor advertising, almost 300 coins were collected. We announced that 50% of all proceeds would be donated to the EFF, however, in the end we gave them all the dirty coins. :)
I want to see the Peek-a-boo booth.. Will you be brining it to Defcon this year?
Yes, we are brining the peek-a-boo booth to Defcon again this year. Stop by the Wall of Sheep; Bring lots of coins and some eye-bleach!! :)
